Crypto Culture
The culture of the crypto community is built on ideals of privacy, decentralisation, and financial freedom, with strong roots in the history of cryptography. Asprey Studio explores how these values intersect with digital art, creating innovative experiences that bridge the digital and physical worlds.
The Origins of Crypto Culture
Cryptography's legacy dates back to WWII, where it was used for secure military communications. Over time, this technology evolved into a tool for privacy and personal freedom. In the late 1980s and '90s, the Cypherpunk movement - combining cryptography with a “cyberpunk” ethos - championed digital privacy and control, setting the stage for the decentralised technologies we know today.

Bitcoin and Decentralisation
Bitcoin, launched in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto, marked a revolutionary shift in the financial landscape. It introduced a decentralised alternative to traditional banking systems, removing the need for government or bank intermediaries. By giving individuals control over their money, Bitcoin offers true financial independence.
The artwork The People by Josie Bellini, part of the collection of Pranksy — the influential and anonymous figurehead of the NFT movement — was featured in the NFT Revolution: I am Pranksy exhibition at the Asprey Studio Gallery in October 2024.
The piece alludes to the idea that "we" and "everyone is Satoshi," reflecting the collective strength and resilience of Bitcoin, which emerges not from a single authority, but from the people. In the background, fragments of George Washington are taken directly from US dollar bills, symbolising the "founding fathers of Bitcoin" and their influence on this new, decentralised financial revolution.
CryptoPunks & Web3
The launch of CryptoPunks in 2017 signaled a new era in digital art. These pixelated avatars became cultural icons, representing the values of decentralisation, anonymity, and creative freedom. Owning a CryptoPunk became a way to align oneself with crypto's principles of privacy, freedom, and ownership in the digital realm.
Web3 represents the next phase of the internet, where users have control over their personal data and digital assets. Unlike Web2 platforms, where corporations profit from user data, Web3 platforms allow individuals to retain ownership of their information while interacting anonymously. This philosophy mirrors the crypto ethos of decentralisation and user empowerment.
The Intersection of Crypto and Art
Asprey Studio embraces the transformative potential of Web3 and blockchain technology in the realm of digital art. Through blockchain integration, digital artworks gain verifiable provenance, ensuring permanent and transparent ownership records.
Projects like The Scream demonstrate this approach, where digital variations, handcrafted silver reproductions, and the original Edvard Munch lithograph are linked through parent-child provenance, all permanently tracked on the blockchain. This ensures authenticity and a permanent connection between the digital and physical realms.
