RYAN BARRETT

Ryan is an orchestrator of controlled chaos, a sculptor of hard edges in naturalistic worlds, a refiner of organic aesthetics that retain rough and human qualities. His beautifully crafted ceramic sculptures are unique pieces, created using his innovative digital coiling technique, each paired with its corresponding digital artwork.

Ryan Barrett is a British artist originally from Suffolk. From a young age, he developed a deep appreciation for sculpture, nurtured by his father and college art teacher.

His artistic journey was further shaped by his studies at Goldsmiths University in London, where he explored a wide range of mediums, from sculpture to painting, and became particularly captivated by textile design. In 2011, as his modelling career took off, Ryan moved to New York, where he began working as a print designer. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-found his own print and textile studio, as well as the innovative online selling platform, Vooprint Ltd, in early 2013.

Ryan began experimenting with ceramics in 2013, taking over his grandmother’s shed to establish his first pottery studio. A self-taught artist, his approach is intuitive and experimental, drawing inspiration from antique man-made constructions and sculptural art, particularly Modern and Mid-Century abstract art.

the digital coiling technique

Drawing from traditional Japanese methods and renowned sculptors such as Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, and studio potter Lucy Rie, Ryan’s work fuses classical techniques with contemporary innovation.

His passion for innovation is most evident in his unique coiling method, which allows him to layer up to 50,000 coils to form the base of his sculptures, blending fine art with textile influences from his background.

For his unique process, Ryan has developed bespoke tools—including an engineered coiling system, enlarged kilns, and VR software. By blending craftsmanship and technology, he begins his creative journey with a sketch, which is then transformed into a VR drawing. From there, he meticulously handcrafts the physical final piece.

unique sculptures paired with digital artworks

The result of Ryan's digital coiling technique and physical intervention are intricate sculptures that are entirely unique and cannot be replicated.

Each physical sculpture is paired with its corresponding digital artwork, ensuring a lasting connection between the two mediums.

The colours are soft pastels, with textures reminiscent of textiles—an influence drawn from Ryan's background in textile design. He is naturally inclined toward experimenting with surfaces and textures, often using natural glazes and minerals to create tonal mixes and cascading effects.
